What is SS-31 peptide?

SS-31 belongs to the Szeto-Schiller family of small, water-soluble peptides. Its sequence, D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, alternates aromatic and positively charged residues. That pattern allows the SS-31 peptide to cross cell membranes without a carrier and to concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane.
